Playstation Lightgun Games on Raspberry Pi – Sinden Lightgun on LCD TV

Hi All

I have done some further work on the Raspberry Pi / RetroPie and really pushed it to the max and managed to get Playstation Lightgun games working. I think it probably needs a further round of optimisation on PCSX-Rearmed to see if I can reduce the response time a bit. Running in normal graphics instead of high graphics cuts it down in half so next time I do a video I will use normal graphics.

Part of the fun with the Raspberry Pi is seeing how much functionality you can squeeze out of the hardware and thats what I’m doing at the moment. The fact that a £25/$30 device is able to do everything it does is incredible. However if you run on the PC without these constraints then the Sinden Lightgun has very high performance across all the different platforms.

I will add support for the Retroarch Lightgun Api in PCSX-Rearmed within a few months so all devices (not just the Sinden Lightgun work). One of the aims of my project is promoting Lightgun support in emulators and hopefully this will help this community on the Pi.

Games successfully played:
Time Crisis
Time Crisis: Project Titan
Point Blank 1
Point Blank 2
Point Blank 3
Elemental Gearbolt
Extreme Ghostbusters: Ultimate Invasion
Resident Evil Survivor
Maximum Force
Judge Dredd (except for unrelated random crashing)
Die Hard Trilogy (with Guncon Patch) – Accuracy with patch is a fraction off
Lethal Enforcers 1 (with Guncon Patch)
Crypt Killer (with Guncon Patch)

Additional games that should work but untested:
Policenauts (with Guncon Patch)
Project Horned Owl (with Guncon Patch)
Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 (with Guncon Patch)
Ghoul Panic
Guntu Western Front June, 1944
Rescue Shot
Simple 1500 Series Vol.024 – The Gun Shooting
Simple 1500 Series Vol.063 – The Gun Shooting 2

Tested games not yet working (still hoping to resolve):
Die Hard Trilogy 2 – Cannot calibrate
Gunfighter: The Legend Of Jesse James – Cannot pick up Guncon at all
Galaxian 3 – Not convinced this has Guncon support

Thanks to the Guncon patches this pretty much covers all the major PS1 games. Area 51 is the only outstanding major title in my opinion and this should work in Mame on the Pi.

I’ve also subsequently to my video had a play with the Guncon lightgun flash removal cheats which all work in PCSX-Rearmed which is great.

Guncon patches/cheats are located here:

Since the video I have much improved the performance, will demonstrate soon.

  1. Hi,

This looks absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to buy a couple of these.

So, is it possible to play those games on the pi now or have you had to tweak the emulator?

Playing on the pi will be cool. Have you thought about support for the Nvidia shield? With that being a bit more powerful you should be able to emulate the ps2 which would let you play pretty much every light gun game worth playing!

I know you mentioned extra buttons but will there be one on the handle like in the gcon 2? That was super useful for time crisis to duck (when you like to have 2 hands on the grip)

Thanks again for doing this. I can’t wait for the Kickstarter!

    1. Hi Philip, I’ve had to tweak the emulator lr-pcsx-rearmed, the code to play PSX on the Pi with Sinden Lightgun will definitely be ready from day 1 as people can just update their version from my Git repository. However over the next few months I want to get the changes in properly to the emulator main branch using the Lightgun API so they are available for everyone and also are part of the standard build. I think the extra buttons should be reachable from the handle but I need to do some ergonomics testing. The Android is next on the list to develop a driver for so I expect to deliver that later in the year. I see it as a big growing area for emulation.

  2. Do you have any plans to release any beta or your current software/configure files/guide to get current light guns working on the PS1 emulator(s) for PI’s and Odroid XU4 for the existing gun options on the market Aimtrak/Wiimotes+mayflash dolphin bar into the retropie community?

    1. Yes 100%, I want to get it merged up as soon as possible so it gets in the next available release / build after. Unfortunately I do need to do some tidying up and make sure it uses the generic libretro API properly so it does work for everyone. Are you a Pi Lightgun user? I have a few more surprises coming soon too 🙂

      1. thats great, I’m just an all around light gun game fanatic , i just built my first arcade cabinet with two light guns, I have 2 more light guns customized on the way cause i want to build a side by side setup where two PS2’s will connect so that two players can link up playing Time crisis 2 & 3 and vampire night since those are the shooters where ilink is compatible. Have an 80 inch projector running the wii to play all the fun shooters on that system. As far as SBC i have the Odroid XU4 running in my cabinet with retropie, and seeing you get the light gun function working on the pi, im hoping it will all just work the same on the odroid xu4 for the ps1 emulator, so I’m excited for your software to try out my current guns on my device to tide me over until your guns get released. I check your site daily every morning when i get into work , eagerly awaiting the kickstarter.
